I want you to picture you and I are having a chat over coffee. We’ve ordered our coffee at the counter and we go to our table.
We sit down and there is that awkward pause before you jump into conversation. I ask you, “How’s work?”
What’s your response?
Last week I asked 23 of my colleagues at a networking event this exact question. You know what 15 of them said?
“Yeh good, busy.”
Literally. The vast majority responded with “yeh good, busy.”
Why is being busy a good thing?
Obviously everyone wants work and needs work. But consistent and manageable work flow with a balanced work/life balance should be what we strive for.
When I first started in real estate it was hectic. Appointments everywhere, calls being made, inspections that I was late to, erratic last minute meetings. I remember hosting 6 open for inspections on a Saturday and I had a little breakdown that night trying to get back to everyone.
This Saturday I have 24 open for inspections, the most I’ve ever had on a single Saturday. Many people comment: “Geez Gav, you look busy at the moment.” To which I respond that I’m not busy. I’ve got a great team around me, my day is structured, my time is managed and on most nights I’m home by 6:30pm.
When people ask me “How’s work?” I now respond “It’s actually quite chill. Do you know of anyone that needs real estate help because I’ve got time.”
What does your day look like?
